THE UNIVERSITY DRAMATIC ARTS SOCIETY(UDAS)

UDAS is anon-profit organization which is engaged in promoting all areas of the dramatic arts, ranging from acting through writing, make-up and behind the scenes. Membership is open to students of the University of the West Indies as well as members of the general public. Who have a keen interest in the dramatic arts.

This society was established in 1948. It was led by Owen Minott and Denise Mitchell. In the initial stages the group conducted readings. However for the first three years, nothing was produced.This changed in 1951 when Joan Swaby ,the secretary, with sheer determination and hard work produced two one act plays.These were:

Harry Denier was directed by its author Derek Walcott . The Two Gentlemen of Soho was a farce by Herbert.

The society has a rich history. Over the years it has presented plays of a high quality . It has also been able to provide plays that are not often seen in theatres in Jamaica.The society promises to take members as well as nonmembers on a fantastic journey.
