The society is the breeding ground for vast individual
talent. This society was originally the University and Gymnastics
society. It was started in 1971 by dance enthusiasts on the Mona
Campus. The Society has been greatly influenced by their predecessor,
the UWI Gymnastics and Dance Society, under the leadership of The
Hon. Rex Nettleford who was the President at the time.
The UWI Dance group has had the opportunity to
work with renowned choreographers such as the Hon. Rex Nettleford,
L'antoinette Stines. Jackie Guy, Patsy Ricketts and many others.
Over the years the group has developed outreach
programmes such as its affiliation with the St. Andrews Childrens'
home. The Society has constant fundraisers and social events to
enrich the enthusiasm of its members.
Yo become member of this group, interested persons
must go through an audition process. The audition will determine
the level at which you begin to dance. You do not have to be a professional
dancer. All you need is to zeal to learn .Members are expected to
develop their dancing skills by attending classes which are offered
by the society. These classes are held regularly through the course
of the year. The classes are held by trained and experienced dance
tutors and choreographers. The classes should equip the members
with the skills to perform for the society's major dance production
held in March/ April. Students are also given a chance to choreograph
dances for the major dance season.
The University Dance society welcomes you with open
arms. As a member of this group you will develop your talents in
dance. We meet on Thursdays at 2:00pm. Come and experience the joy
of dancing.
